Tunnel Jet Fans

Jet fans (induction fans) are mounted at the tunnel crown or side wall and drive air along the tunnel with a high-velocity jet. They are the mainstay of longitudinal ventilation and fire smoke control in road and metro tunnels. Both unidirectional and reversible types are available, with reversible units used where smoke must be pushed in either direction.

SINDFAN jet fans cover Ø500mm to Ø1600mm with thrust from 152N to 1691N. Impellers are die-cast aluminium with ASTM E155 X-ray inspection, bearings are specified for L10 ≥ 20000h, and casings are 3-6mm mild steel hot-dip galvanised. Three build options are available: bell mouth, 1D silencer or 2D silencer.

Figures above are our standard ranges; the actual supply is per the agreed technical specification. Impeller performance curves describe the bare impeller under standard inlet conditions. Once installed, performance is affected by casing clearance, tip clearance, inlet straightening and guide vanes; tested as a complete fan to GB/T 1236 / AMCA 210 the result typically differs by 2-5%. Site measurement governs and no complete-fan performance warranty is implied.

Typical applications

  • Road tunnel longitudinal ventilation
  • Metro and rail tunnel ventilation and smoke control
  • Urban underground roads and utility tunnels
  • Hydraulic tunnels and mine roadways
  • Local induction ventilation in large workshops and warehouses
  • Car park ventilation and smoke control

Selection notes

  • The governing selection figure for a jet fan is thrust (N), not air volume - thrust determines whether the tunnel section reaches the required longitudinal air velocity.
  • Fire class drives the motor choice: any smoke control duty needs a high-temperature build (250°C/1h and above).
  • On reversible units forward and reverse thrust may not be equal, so check both directions in the smoke control design.
  • Allow space for anti-vibration mounts and installation height; silencer length directly affects noise and layout.

FAQ

Unidirectional or reversible?

Choose unidirectional for ventilation only (higher efficiency, lower cost); choose reversible where smoke control or reverse air movement is required.

What does the high-temperature rating mean?

It is the time the fan can run at the stated smoke temperature - a key smoke control design parameter. Road tunnels commonly use 250°C/1h; 300°C/2h or 400°C/1h are available for higher requirements.

How is thrust calculated?

Thrust depends on jet velocity, impeller diameter and flow, and requires a longitudinal ventilation calculation based on tunnel cross-section, length and traffic conditions. We can support the selection if you provide the tunnel parameters.

Do you provide CCCF certification?

Building smoke exhaust products require CCCF in China. Where we supply the fan body or impeller only, certification is handled by the fan builder or the project; contact us in advance if you need our support for certification.
